They live on the edge of society, for the most part independently of Monterey even though they often venture down to the quay in search of day jobs when the thirst for wine has grown too strong. In a humorous fashion it portrays the everyday lives of the Paisano, the jobless but peaceful people with a mix of Mexican, Indian and American blood who inhabit Tortilla Flat, the shabby district of Monterey. It is set at the coast of California, in the fictional town of Monterey. Tortilla Flat is one of John Steinbeck’s earliest books and also his first commercial success.
