Tortilla Flat is not a completely realistic depiction of history but its message is hard to ignore, namely: The situation for those on the fringes of society is not as dire as those at the center might think.
The life of the Paisano is so much more limited and yet so much more carefree compared to the people of Montereys’. They live on the edge of society, for the most part independently of Monterey even though they often venture down to the quay in search of day jobs when the thirst for wine has grown too strong. In a humorous fashion it portrays the everyday lives of the Paisano, the jobless but peaceful people with a mix of Mexican, Indian and American blood who inhabit Tortilla Flat, the shabby district of Monterey. It is set at the coast of California, in the fictional town of Monterey. Tortilla Flat is one of John Steinbeck’s earliest books and also his first commercial success.
